Hot Club of Cape Town
The Hot Club of Cape Town was formed in 2016. Three experienced musicians, Daniel Zachariah Franks (violin), Elton Goslett and Mike Hardaker (guitars), were brought together by a shared passion: the swing music known as Le Jazz Hot, Jazz Manouche, Gypsy Jazz or, simply, the Hot Club sound. The Hot Club sound emerged from Europe in the 1930s, combining Swing Jazz with the rippling melodies of Parisian dance-halls and the distinctive Gypsy harmonies of the Eastern Mediterranean. The Hot Club of Cape Town adds a hint of Cape Jazz into the mix, to produce a sound that is steeped in tradition, yet contemporary and local at the same time. Jazz standards rub shoulders with tunes written by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, and also more contemporary numbers from the likes of Angelo Debarre and the Cape's own Abdullah Ibrahim. It’s fun, lively, romantic and, above all, swinging music for all ages.
